Academic Honesty Lesson
For my Technology integration Project students will be using EVERFI to introduce them to some financial literacy skills as well as using Google Sheets and Canva to create a menu and cost out ingredients. Due to the nature of the lesson (s), there is not much scope to cheat or be ‘academically dishonest’ but I have outlined the few opportunities there may be:
Key areas of academic honesty to consider:
- using an existing menu from canva and submitting as own work
- using another student’s snip of their ‘score’ for the EVERFI units and passing off as their own
- Paired work- only 1 partner doing the work and claiming it as your own
How I will address these issues:
- View all canva meal planner templates prior to the lesson. Explicitly state expectations, success criteria for students to use and apply- increased chances of menus being adapted to meet these.
- Show students the Progress Checker and monitor student’s progress using the program. Certificiate snip should match progress score on tracker
- Explicitly state expectations of the task and track changes to access student’s contributions
I find partner work is hard to assess as you said, who did what work. I like your idea of tracking tasks to keep the students honest about their contribution. Do you do more of a journaling or have a specific document for this?
Students assess themselves against a rubric (just out of 4) for each assignment. Teachers mark out of 4 too but do not share with students until the conferences at the end of each unit where we compare and set targets. Students reflect periodically on the marking rubric document (on the same page that their assignment link is added so it is all in one place). Sometimes they reflect on their e-portfolio. At the end of the unit, students summarize their participation in the unit, reflect on their strengths and take ‘snips’ of work to support core competencies or learning objectives.
