EDDL 5131 Week 10 and 11 Activity 1

Affordances of video and video production styles

Hansch et al (2015) identify 9 different ways that videos can be used:

  • building rapport
  • virtual field trips
  • manipulating time and space
  • telling stories
  • motivating learners
  • historical footage
  • demonstrations
  • visual juxtaposition
  • multimedia presentation

They further that there are 18 video production styles:

  1. Talking Head
  2. Presentation Slides with Voice-Over
  3. Picture-in-Picture
  4. Text-Overlay
  5. Khan-Style Tablet Capture
  6. Udacity Style Tablet Capture
  7. Actual Paper/Whiteboard
  8. Screencast
  9. Animation
  10. Classroom Lecture
  11. Recorded Seminar
  12. Interview
  13. Conversation
  14. Live Video
  15. Webcam Capture
  16. Demonstration
  17. On Location
  18. Green Screen

 

Ljubojevic, M., Vaskovic, V., Stankovic, S., & Vaskovic, J. (2014) noted that students acquired higher levels of knowledge if a lecture was presented in segments, entertainments videos were effective to engage and motivate students but not as efficient as education videos, and using a supplementary video in the middle of a lecture was most effective.

Based on this research I would like to use entertainment videos at the start of a lesson to engage students and chunk the lesson to help students process the learning. To add variety, I would utilize the 18 different styles and ensure they were fit for purpose.

 

One learning outcome I teach is:

  • Research, create and evaluate a suitable prototype using digital tools.

I would use a video as a demonstration of how to use Canva to create the prototype. This would help support students who may be absent and also promote individual student learning preferences by allowing students to ‘self-pace’ (Laurillard, 2002). I would use a screencast and possibly include me at the bottom to personalize and build rapport.
