Five Stage Model
- The COI framework views Teaching (design and facilitation) as supporting cognitive and social presence. Likewise, the Five Stage Model sees facilitating as vital in motivating and engaging students so that they feel confident in being able socialise online.
- The Five Stage Model is more hierarchical wheres COI is a triangulation of social, cognitive and teaching
- The Five Stage Model places more emphasis on the facilitator and what they need to do for the students
- The COI framework sees the learner as also being a facilitator that can support cognitive and social presence.
One additional strategy that I might apply is to provide a welcome video where learners can see what I look like and create a sense of community. This could be extended yto students in the form of a video or an image so that learners see beyond the avatar or icon used. This will help develop a sense of community.
