EDDL 5131 WEEK 3 Activity 2

Below is an accessibility checklist that I created for designing my G-Site which will host my current course:

 

ACCESSIBILITY Checklist for g-site
  1. Logical tab reading order for each page.
  2. Each page contains a unique title (use TITLE FORMATTING)
  3. Headings are used followed by subheadings (USE HEADING AND THEN SUBHEADING FORMAT)
  4. Use ‘normal text’ formatting for main body of writing
  5. Description is provided for bullet or numbered lists
  6. Hyperlinks are embedded with a descriptive explanation and name of site. To make this distinct, link with an icon or image.
  7. Check colour contrasts (print in black and white)
  8. Provide Alt text for all meaningful images
  9. Non-informative/ aesthetic images label as ‘decorative’
  10. Google Docs and PDFs, use same format as site (heading, clearly hyperlinked, image descriptions)
  11. Google Slides. ensure each slide has a unique title and all images and multiple media are tagged.
  12. Google Sheets- Headers and Rows are clearly labelled.
  13. Videos are captioned or a transcript is provided. (Content descriptions added if needed- provided by support staff).
  14. Audio- transcript only version available
  15. Disable auto play on videos.

 

EVALUATION of G-SITE USING ACCESSIBILITY CHECKLIST
  1. Large site- could be frustrating with lots of pages. Broken down into units?
  2. All unique and clearly labelled
  3. Formatting followed
  4. Formatting followed
  5. Sentences used to introduce lists i.e ‘Below are the most popular Job Shadows from the past 3 years’
  6. All hyperlinks include a description and image/icon
  7. Printed in clack and white and all readable
  8. Alt Text used
  9. Images labelled as decorative
  10. All reformatted
  11. Title need to be added to each individual slide
  12. Yes
  13. Some transcripts are provided (from YouTube) but need to provide transcripts for teacher-made tutorial videos.
  14. Currently no audio materials
  15. Video auto play disabled.

    A G-site is a Google-Site. I use this for the student’s e-portfolio. All work is either hyperlinked on here (using button, images and other formats for a more visual display) or completed directly on the G-Site. When students hand in an assignment they simply publish their site and give me the link to the relevant page. There is so much more personalization and pride in their work than last semester!

      Hi

      Thanks for the tip; yes I do embed my hyperlinks as it just declutters the page. For resources they need to open, I tend to use a description such as ‘Make yourself a copy of the ‘Transferable Skills Checklist’ (and will embed the doc to this title- so it matches the name of the doc they open). Plus I also include ‘you only also click on the Google Doc icon to make yourself a copy. I tend to find that students scanning. the page to get to the assignment sometimes miss the hyperlink but will always see the Google doc icon etc.

      In their own work, students aren’t allowed to use long hyperlinks. They will embed the work with a title, image or some other way to ‘disguise’ the long link. For their business card and resumes they use a bit.ly to shorten it.
